For many leaders, shepherding the department through change and conflict can represent some of the greatest challenges. While often perceived as issues that require solution and resolution, change and conflict can offer the department and you as a leader an opportunity to clarify priorities and build collective investment in the unit’s vision and mission.
Some degree of friction between colleagues is expected as part of the strategizing and decision-making process in the department and can lead to more productive outcomes as ideas are discussed and options are weighed. If not managed effectively, interpersonal conflict can negatively impact the department’s ability to work together.
Becoming more educated about the changing landscape of opportunities and priorities at the university, will help you to situate discussions around change in a larger context. Each year there is a series of DEO workshops that provide an opportunity to hear from and engage with campus leadership. There are numerous learning opportunities to help campus leaders navigate conflict, including DEO workshops and the “Crucial Conversations” workshop.
