A Career advancement is for a staff member who has taken on additional work, responsibility, expanded scope or increased proficiency in an area and is typically deserving of a 1-5% raise, without a change in classification.
A Career promotion is for a staff member who has increased work responsibility and scope in a way that moves them to be more appropriately classified in a level above their current classification and typically includes a raise of 1-10%.
A Career Shift - when it is determined that the current classification or job family is inaccurate for the work being done and a person should shift (within the same pay level) to a new classification that is more aligned with their primary work. This typically does not include a raise.
In some cases, a position may be eligible for a market adjustment. There are several situations/reasons that warrant a market adjustment including bringing an employee in line with competitive salaries in the University and/or amongst peers or addressing apparent disparities in compensation amongst similarly qualified candidates.
Exceptional Performance Award
For staff who complete a large or complex, high impact project or take on additional work for an extended period, maintaining performance expectations, a lump sum award of up to 10% of their base salary can be provided up to 2 times per fiscal year, 6 months apart.
For staff who temporarily take on additional work or go above and beyond during a time of departmental need, a lump sum of up to $200 net ($311.30 with fringe), can be awarded up to 6 times per fiscal years, 30 days apart.

If you'd like to pay an employee for completing additional work, above and beyond their typical job duties, we can help determine the best route to take.

Submit a "High Five" for a staff member who has had a positive impact on you. Recognize staff for what they've done well and why you appreciate them. Our HR team will send them an individual certificate with your note and they may be highlighted for their great work here!

Staff Recognition Program
Want to create a staff recognition program for your department or team? We can help!
If you're planning to be out for an extended period of time, here are some things to consider!
- Work with HR if you need FMLA or assistance
- Take note of your vacation and sick accruals (check these out in Employee Self-Service!)
- For approvers, set an "Out Of Office Assistant" in Universal Workflow. This can be taken care of in your Employee Self-Service.
- Hand off tasks, appropriately.
- Set an Away Message on your email and voicemail with additional people to contact.
