Associate Provost for Faculty and Strategic Operations
Position Summary
The Associate Provost for Faculty and Strategic Operations collaborates across campus to advance the recruitment, hiring, mentoring, development, and promotion and tenure of faculty at the University of Iowa. The associate provost advises the provost on critical faculty matters and provides oversight and support for the collegiate associate deans for faculty. As a member of the Provost’s Leadership Team and the Strategic Plan Action and Resource Committee (SPARC), they provide leadership and guidance for strategic initiatives aligned with the university’s mission and goal of fostering an environment where faculty members can thrive. This position is housed within the Office of the Provost and reports to the Executive Vice President and Provost.
Responsibilities
- In consultation with the provost, work with the collegiate deans and associate deans to administer, develop, and implement policies, objectives, and procedures concerning faculty.
- Lead faculty success initiatives as part of the implementation of the university’s strategic plan, including identifying resources to support the initiatives.
- Oversee the strategic management of academic space planning and policy to ensure responsible and effective stewardship.
- Play a strategic role in the oversight of the P3 program.
- Advise the provost on faculty-related matters, such as promotion and tenure decisions, faculty misconduct issues and policy violations, and faculty development activities.
- Administer faculty development opportunities within the purview of the Office of the Provost, including faculty honorific awards, professional development awards, faculty fellowships, endowed positions, new faculty orientation, and professional development and leadership programs.
- Working with other partners on campus (Office of Civil Rights Compliance, University Human Resources, Office of General Counsel), provide oversight of investigations into faculty-related misconduct.
- Ensure that all faculty and executive search committees receive timely and effective training, coaching, and resources designed to ensure equitable and inclusive search practices that result in excellent applicant pools and hires. Provide oversight of high-level administrative searches, including associate provost and dean positions.
- Serve as the UI liaison to the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) Academic, DEO and Dean Leadership programs. Serve as a member of the Provost Leadership Team and Strategic Plan Action and Resource Committee (SPARC). Participate as necessary in the Council of Deans, Faculty Senate, Faculty Council, and Iowa Board of Regents meetings. Lead and coordinate regular meetings of the associate deans for faculty.
- Provide organization and oversight of decanal, collegiate, and departmental reviews. Coordinate the preparation of reports submitted to the Iowa Board of Regents regarding reviews and other faculty-related matters.
- Exercise functional and administrative supervision of the Office of the Provost’s faculty HR administrative staff and the Office of Community Engagement.
- Spearhead special projects assigned by the provost and represent the Office of the Provost at events as needed.
Required Qualifications
- A terminal degree in an academic or professional discipline.
- Rank of full professor with tenure at the University of Iowa.
- A record of personal integrity, good judgment, initiative, innovation, collaboration and consensus-building.
- Demonstrated experience advancing a welcoming and inclusive environment.
- Substantial administrative experience with senior collegiate and central administrators.
- Substantial experience with personnel issues regarding faculty.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Desired Qualifications
- Supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of policies and processes of the University and higher education generally.
Appointment
The Associate Provost for Faculty and Strategic Operations position is an “at will” appointment. This is a full-time appointment beginning on or before July 1, 2025. A part-time appointment of up to 25% effort, starting in January 2025 to allow for overlap and training with the current position holder, is desirable.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
