Katherine Beydler

Biography

Katherine works with colleges, faculty, and graduate students across campus to support the pedagogical and professional development of graduate student instructors. As part of this work, Katherine oversees New Teaching Assistant Orientation as well as the Graduate Teaching Fellows program. She has also collaborated with campus partners to developed new opportunities for graduate students including learning communities (funded by a grant from the POD Network) and a peer teaching mentor program (part of the P3-funded project, “Excellence in Teaching and Learning: Developing a Set of Effective Strategies for Course and Curriculum Innovation.”). Katherine is especially happy to consult on teaching portfolios, formative assessment of teaching, mentorship of teachers, peer teaching communities, and TILE active learning classrooms.

In addition to disciplinary publications on Roman archaeology and history, including a chapter on teaching Classics with games in the Bloomsbury edited book Women in Classical Video Games, Katherine has presented research on graduate student development at national conferences. She is currently working on a multi-institutional study investigating nation-wide trends and approaches to graduate student teaching orientations. Katherine serves as the chair of the POD Network Equity and Outreach committee, part of the Graduate Student and Postdoctoral special interest group.

Katherine is an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Classics where she teaches classes on ancient medicine and environmental history. In her free time, you can find her playing video games, which she also uses abundantly in her teaching.
