Anastasia Williams

Assistant Director, Center for Teaching
Biography

Anastasia is an assistant director at the Center for Teaching. In her work, she focuses on inclusive teaching, course design, syllabus design, well-being, and universal design for learning (UDL).

Anastasia leads the DEI in Teaching Practice program, supporting iterative, unit-wide discussions about evidence-based teaching practices that support welcoming and equitable classroom. Anastasia's portfolio also includes the Center for Teaching's Handbook for Teaching Excellence, the Inclusive Teaching Book Club, the Student as Partners program, the TILE program, and working with practicum undergraduate students. In addition, she supports faculty through one-on-one consultations, pedagogical workshops, and retreats. Anastasia founded and co-leads the Obermann Working Group Reconceptualizing the Mental Health Crisis in Higher Education: A Mindful Journey. She has served on various University of Iowa committees including the First-Generation Task Force, Student Success Team, DEI Success Collaborative, Neurodiversity and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) committee, and Native American Council.

Anastasia's scholarly interests include equitable teaching, UDL and accessibility, partnering with departments and divisions for inclusive teaching efforts and culture change, and imposter phenomenon in higher ed. Her work has been published in Tomorrow's Professor. Her current work-in-progress explores reconceptualization of accountability as shared responsibility in the work of fostering inclusive teaching. Anastasia co-convenes the Immigrant affinity group at the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network, where she also serves as an inclusive language consultant. Anastasia is trained with the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI).

Before joining the Center for Teaching, Anastasia worked at Brown University’s Harriet W. Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning as head teaching consultant. She has taught Russian language at Brown University and Indiana University and has taught Russian and Czech literature and culture courses at Brown University.
