Barrett (Barry) W. Thomas will be appointed as senior vice provost in the University of Iowa Office of the Provost, recognizing his leadership and strategic contributions during the past year as associate provost for faculty and strategic operations. He will transition to the appointment as soon as a new associate provost for faculty is in place.
In his new role, Thomas will help advance key university priorities and strategic initiatives that support the institution's academic mission, operational excellence, and long-term success.
Since joining the Office of the Provost in 2025, Thomas has helped lead efforts to strengthen faculty success, enhance institutional effectiveness, and advance the university’s work in artificial intelligence. He has contributed to the development of the Certificate in Artificial Intelligence, established the AI Industry Advisory Board, and collaborated with Information Technology Services to expand AI resources and opportunities for faculty, staff, and students.
“Barry has demonstrated exceptional leadership, vision, and a deep commitment to the university's mission and long-term goals," says Kevin Kregel, executive vice president and provost. "His ability to bring together campus partners, lead complex initiatives, and advance innovation is incredibly valuable to our community.”
As senior vice provost, Thomas will serve as a strategic advisor to the provost and help lead university-wide efforts that strengthen collaboration and advance institutional priorities. He also will play an important role in the university’s engagement with the Iowa Board of Regents.
“I am honored to serve the university in this new role,” says Thomas. “I look forward to working alongside our outstanding faculty, staff, and campus leaders to build on the university’s momentum in artificial intelligence and other strategic priorities.”
The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost has launched an internal search for an associate provost for faculty to succeed Thomas.
