Kevin C. Kregel
Dr. Kevin Kregel was appointed executive vice president and provost in February 2021 after serving in the role on an interim basis beginning in July 2020. As the university’s chief academic officer, he provides strategic leadership for the institution’s academic enterprise, advancing excellence in teaching, research, and service.
Prior to his appointment as provost, Dr. Kregel served as executive vice provost and senior associate provost for faculty beginning in July 2019 and as associate provost for faculty starting in September 2014, where he advanced faculty development and academic initiatives.
Dr. Kregel earned both his BS and PhD in physiology and biophysics from the University of Iowa. He then completed an NIH National Research Service Award postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Arizona. During his research training, he was also awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellowship and a German Academic Exchange Service Study Visit Award.
He joined the University of Iowa faculty and rose to the rank of full professor. Before entering central administration, he served as department executive officer in the Department of Health and Human Physiology. He also holds a collegiate fellowship in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Kregel’s research has focused on physiological adaptations to exercise, aging, and environmental stressors, supported for more than two decades by federal agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense. He has presented his work widely at national and international scientific meetings and symposia. He has also served on numerous federal scientific review and technical panels and provided advisory expertise to the World Health Organization.
Nationally, Dr. Kregel has held prominent leadership roles in the scientific community. He chaired science policy committees for both the American Physiological Society and the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology (FASEB) and served as president of FASEB in 2022–23. He has also contributed to the field through service on the editorial boards of several leading scientific journals.
