Award recognizes outstanding faculty who have made exceptional contributions to the university and the community

Established in memory of Professor Michael J. Brody, president of the Faculty Senate from 1986 to 1987, this award recognizes outstanding faculty who have made exceptional contributions to the university and the community. This year’s recipients were announced at the February 2026 UI Faculty Senate meeting, and each will receive $1,000 and a commemorative piece of artwork designed by a graduate student in the UI School of Art, Art History, and Design.

Ed Gillan

Ed Gillan, professor of Chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, is a respected leader in shared governance at Iowa, serving as Faculty Senate vice president (2022-23), president (2023-24), and past president (2024-25). Known for his expertise in university policy and collaborative leadership, he has strengthened shared governance, improved faculty policies, and advanced laboratory safety for researchers across campus. His decades of service have shaped institutional decision-making and enhanced the culture of research and faculty life across campus.

 

Teresa Marshall

Teresa Marshall, professor in the Department of Preventative and Community Dentistry in the College of Dentistry, is an expert in nutrition and oral health whose nearly three decades of service have advanced the UI’s mission. A former Faculty Senate president and past president, she led shared governance during pivotal moments while mentoring students and expanding research opportunities. Her work has influenced public health policy and strengthened education, reflecting a deep commitment to improving lives in Iowa and beyond.
