Subject: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence (2020)

DEADLINE:  Noon on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 (the day before Thanksgiving)

We write to invite nominations for the President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence.  This award represents the highest level of achievement in teaching given at the University of Iowa.  We seek nominations of outstanding faculty with sustained records of teaching excellence.  You must be able to demonstrate your nominee's commitment to students and compelling evidence of their contributions to student learning and outcomes in and out of the classroom.  Three clinical-track or tenure-track faculty members and one instructional track faculty or adjunct faculty will receive the awards.  Each award carries a $3,000 honorarium.

Each college is eligible to submit up to three nominations to the Council on Teaching on behalf of clinical-track or tenure-track faculty and up to two nominations for those in instructional track or adjunct faculty positions.  The college must follow the guidelines and use the appropriate cover sheet for each nominee.  The cover sheets can be found on the Council on Teaching website at this link.  Nominations should be submitted electronically to Kimberly Nye (council-on-teaching@uiowa.edu), in the Office of the Provost, by noon on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 (note: this is the day before Thanksgiving).

We encourage colleges to use an inclusive nomination process involving a diverse and broadly representative group of students, faculty members, and administrators to identify outstanding faculty members with sustained records of teaching excellence and commitment to student learning.  As the Council wishes to encourage greater participation by students in the nomination process, the letter from the Collegiate Dean explaining the college's nomination process must provide clear evidence of meaningful participation by students in the nomination and selection process.  The Council expects colleges to give full consideration to women and minority candidates in the nomination process.  This award is not restricted to a Collegiate Teaching Award recipient or nominee but having been previously recognized for teaching excellence (e.g., collegiate awards, professional association awards) is strongly considered.  The President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence can only be received once. The 2020-21 guidelines can be found on the Council on Teaching website at: https://cot.org.uiowa.edu/teaching-awards/president-provost-award-teaching-excellence/president-provost-award-nomination

If you have any questions, you may contact Bruce Nottingham-Spencer, Chair of the Council on Teaching (via email: bruce-spencer@uiowa.edu).
