To advance the UI’s strategic plan goal of excellence in teaching and learning, the university is transitioning the administrative home of the Center for Teaching from the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology (OTLT) in Information Technology Services back to the Office of the Provost. The transition will begin in August and continue throughout the fall semester.

Moving the Center for Teaching under the Office of the Provost aligns with structures at Big Ten peer institutions, reinforcing the value the university places on teaching and learning and enabling the center to expand its reach and scope. The center will continue working closely with teams in OTLT and its many campus partners, providing the excellent training, coaching, and resources faculty and graduate students count on. Building upon those successful initiatives, the move will enhance collaborations to assist in the development and promotion of collegiate, departmental, and program-level resources.

The email address, phone number, and physical location of the center will not change:

  • email: teaching@uiowa.edu
  • phone: 319-335-6048
  • location: 2090 University Capitol Centre, behind the CoWork Commons

Additional details about an updated website for the Center for Teaching will be shared in the coming months. Until then, you can continue to find the center on the OTLT website.

Registration is now open for all of the Center for Teaching's events and workshops for the fall 2023 semester.

A legacy of impact and collaboration

The Center for Teaching has made a significant impact over the past 27 years by designing and delivering some of the most effective faculty teaching resources on campus to enhance student success. Members of the center are nationally known in their field and serve on numerous boards and task forces across campus.

Over the past 10 years as part of the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology, the center launched an annual Course Design Institute, provided support for new, tenure-track assistant professors through the Early Career Faculty Academy, developed a highly-rated virtual orientation for new teaching assistants, and launched new editions of the Handbook for Teaching Excellence.

OTLT will continue to provide campus with essential instructional technology tools and guidance, teaching and learning assessment expertise, and high-quality learning spaces. OTLT's integrated approach provided a rapid and successful response to virtual teaching and learning during the pandemic.

Located at 2800 University Capitol Centre, OTLT includes Instructional Services (its-helpdesk@uiowa.edu), Learning Spaces Technology (classroom-technology@uiowa.edu), and Research and Analytics (its-ra@iowa.uiowa.edu). Updated contact information will be announced this fall but until then people can continue to reach OTLT at the same email and phone number.
