In the process of carrying out its teaching, research, and service mission, the university also serves as a tremendous resource for the community and for the state of Iowa--not just for education but also for health care, culture, and economic development.

Working with the president and vice presidents, as well as with the leadership of the colleges and other academic units, the provost promotes partnerships with a wide range of public and private constituencies in order to facilitate the mutual exchange of ideas, resources, and expertise. 

These collaborative efforts create more opportunities for community involvement; extend the reach of the university's academic, cultural, and health care resources; and enhance economic development.  The provost also works to ensure that an appreciation for the value of "engagement" is part of the university culture and curriculum. 

In spring 2013 the Office of the Provost announced the establishment of an Office of Outreach and Engagement to promote collaboration between UI faculty, staff, and students and community partners across the state.  In fall 2020 the name of the office was changed to Community Engagement.
