The Office of the Provost invites you to participate in a webinar and campus discussion about Search Advocates-Promoting Diversity and Mitigating Bias on University Search Committees, Thursday, May 18th, noon-2:00 p.m. in 1117 UCC (International Programs). The webinar will be streamed live from noon-1:00 p.m. and a discussion about next steps for our campus will immediately follow. This webinar is provided via UI’s institutional membership in the Central Midwest Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC) and has been approved for one HR (General) recertification credit hour toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute and one PDC recertification credit hour through SHRM.

Program Description:

Oregon State University Search Advocates are outside committee members trained to enhance diversity, validity, and equity on university searches. Search Advocates complete an initial workshop series addressing current research, theory, and practical strategies for working with search committees from position development through integration of the new hire. They are prepared to help committee members test their thinking, identify and address complex process concerns, understand and promote diversity, and anticipate/address potential bias risks.

  • Why did the university develop this model, and how does it work?
  • How much impact have Search Advocates had at OSU, and what factors can increase their impact?
  • What should you consider when starting a similar program?

The OSU Search Advocate Program was profiled in the cover article of the 9/11/16 edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education: “How to Do a Better Job of Searching for Diversity.”

Presenter: Anne Gillies has directed Oregon State University’s Search Advocate program since its inception in 2007. Before transitioning to full-time Director of the Search Advocate Program last July, she also served as Associate Director for Affirmative Action and Advancement in the OSU Office of Equity and Inclusion. With over 30 years of higher education experience, Anne has worked to promote equity, inclusion, and diversity in faculty recruitment and selection at Oregon State for the last 20 years.

Online registrations for the campus event are requested by Friday, May 12, 2017. Register here: Search Advocates-Promoting Diversity and Mitigating Bias on University Search Committees.
