Cluster Hiring Announcement

Dear colleagues,

Last fall the Office of the Provost invited proposals for the next round of strategic interdisciplinary tenured/tenure track faculty hires under the UI Cluster Hire Initiative. During the spring semester, the Office of the Provost, Council of Deans, and Office of the Vice President for Research reviewed many worthy submissions. I am now pleased to announce the winning proposals for 2011-12 (with some accompanying text from those proposals):

Cluster Hiring Announcement

Dear colleagues,

Last April the Office of the Provost invited proposals to recruit tenure-track or tenured faculty in two interdisciplinary clusters: "Aging in the Heartland" and "Public Humanities." Two faculty committees, one for each cluster, reviewed the proposals over the summer and in some cases raised questions with the proposing units that ultimately helped to strengthen their plans.

Call for Nominations: The Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy

With the Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy, the Office of the Provost each year honors a University of Iowa administrator, staff member, or faculty member (in a non-teaching role) who supports undergraduate education and serves as a strong, effective advocate for undergraduate students and the undergraduate experience.

Medical Absences From Class

We have been notified by Student Health Services that they are expecting a significant uptick in the number of cases of influenza in Iowa City, especially as students return to campus. We would like to remind you of our policies regarding student medical absences, especially during situations like this.

Greetings and Update

Faculty and Staff Colleagues:

Welcome to the spring semester! I hope you all had wonderful holidays and a great start to the new year. For those of you who are new to campus--we're very glad you're here, and I look forward to meeting you soon.

As the semester gets under way, it's a good time to share with you a brief overview of some recent accomplishments, and to take a look at some of the ways we are moving forward.

Federal Budget

In the summer of 2011, the Congress passed and the President signed the Budget Control Act of 2011. This legislation, among other things, created the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction. This Committee was charged with developing a plan for Congressional approval that would reduce overall Federal spending by $1.2 trillion over the next decade. If no agreement could be reached, the legislation mandated a sequester, or across the board budget cut, that would take effect on January 2, 2013. While Congressional action has delayed implementation of the sequester, absent additional action

Phil's Day Photo Contest

UI Faculty and Staff:

On Thursday, May 2, we will celebrate the 2nd annual "Phil's Day" on campus.

Phil--short for philanthropy--refers to the many faculty, staff, alumni, and friends who make donations to the UI, as well as the collective impact of their gifts.  Whether you have made a donation to the university or have benefited in some way from private support to the UI (or both) . . . Phil's Day is for you.  It's our day to celebrate philanthropy on our campus, and I hope you'll mark your calendar and plan to join in!
