The University of Iowa Council on Teaching announces the 29th annual Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards and invites nominations for 2017-18.  This award recognizes teaching assistants who have demonstrated outstanding ability as teachers at the University of Iowa. 

Teaching assistants from all academic units may be nominated.  Nominees must have a formal appointment as a teaching assistant and certify that they have had formal student contact during at least one of the following semesters: Spring 2017, Summer 2017, and/or Fall 2017.  A teaching assistant who has won this award in the past may not be nominated again.

Nominations may be initiated by students, faculty, colleagues, departmental executive officers (DEOs) or deans. Self-nominations are not allowed. 

Nomination Procedure (all of the following steps must be completed by NOON on Friday, March 2, 2018):

  1. All materials should be submitted to the nominee’s teaching department according to internal guidelines within each college. Please note that the submission of materials online triggers a request for a DEO electronic approval, and the application is not considered complete until that signature is obtained. A minimum of one week lead time is suggested.
  2. The DEO’s office will submit the required documents using the online submission form on the Council of Teaching website. Departments must allow time for the DEO to respond to the request for electronic approval.
  3. When all documents are successfully submitted, the DEO will receive an automated email message with instructions for electronic approval of the nomination. The nomination is not complete without this approval.
  4. The nomination is not complete until the DEO confirms approval. The cut-off time to complete all of the above steps is noon on Friday, March 2, 2018. After this time, the system will not accept any additional nominations or approvals by the DEO.

Please help publicize the award by informing students, faculty, and staff who may be interested in nominating someone.  This information and instructions are available on the Council on Teaching webpage for the Outstanding Teaching Award.  Please follow the timelines for submission within your College in order to complete the online process by the deadline. No nominations can be submitted to the Council on Teaching after noon on Friday, March 2, 2018.
