[Note: These mailings are available and archived on the web at]

FROM:P. Barry Butler
 Executive Vice President and Provost

September 17, 2012

In an effort to strengthen communication between the Office of the Provost and your offices, I plan to send you a monthly communication that

  • provides a few highlights of what this Office is working on;
  • conveys succinct requests for action that have not been sent out previously;
  • alerts you to any upcoming events and deadlines;
  • compiles recent communications from or related to the Provost’s Office; and
  • shares a few higher education-related articles this office has found to be of interest (for you to read or not, according to your time and interest).

I welcome your feedback about whether this communication is useful to you, and what you might like to see added. These mailings will be available and archived on the web at

Highlights of recent/upcoming activity:

  • The official fall 2012 enrollment report was released September 5th.
  • The latest Purdue Report indicates substantial improvement in the average compensation for UI graduate assistants. For AY 2011-12, UI ranked third in TA compensation and first in RA compensation among our CIC peers. We will be negotiating a new two year contract with COGS this upcoming year.
  • UI has joined “eduroam,” an international wireless network available at participating educational and research institutions in 54 countries. Once your device is configured for the eduroam wireless network here, you can connect automatically to eduroam at other participating institutions by logging in with your UI credentials.
  • This fall, about 800 University of Iowa students in participating courses have a chance to try out electronic textbooks free of charge as part of a pilot project to examine the effectiveness of e-texts. ITS and the College of Education will investigate the relationships between e-text usage and student learning, as well as whether e-texts are more convenient and economical. The UI is one of 25 schools participating in the pilot, which is sponsored by two higher education technology consortiums, Internet2 and EDUCAUSE.

New requests for action:

  • International Programs maintains a web database of all agreements and linkages with institutions abroad. It is searchable by type of agreement, country, and keyword: Please 1) make this resource known to the faculty in their colleges so that they can take advantage of institutional connections for their projects and travels, and 2) notify us ( of any errors or omissions regarding linkages in your college.
  • The Chief Diversity Office is convening the first meeting of the Diversity Events Collaborative, composed of unit faculty/staff responsible for organizing diversity events on campus. Please submit the name of your representative to Dana Dominguez at for an invitation to the October 26th meeting.
