Highlights of recent/upcoming activity:

  • Informatics Initiative: We have announced the UI Informatics initiative (UI^3), with Professor Greg Carmichael of the College of Engineering as inaugural director:
  • Pilot of course registration wait list system:  The university is piloting a new function in its custom-built student record system that will allow students to join wait lists for courses that are full and receive notifications as slots open up. The system also checks students’ eligibility to enroll in a course prior to adding them to the wait list.  The automated wait lists are being piloted with early registration for winter 2013 and spring 2014 courses. Starting in April, when summer/fall registration opens up, any department will be able to offer the wait list.  Additional details about the pilot are available in a recent article in The Gazette.
  • “Phishing” scam:  ITS is enhancing security and reminding campus technology users how to avoid being duped after a number of employees became victims of a recent “phishing” scam.  Phishing uses “spoofed” or fake emails and websites to trick people into giving out personal information.  Jane Drews, head of the UI Information Security and Policy Office, says that in addition to improved security and filtering, users need to become savvier about spotting suspicious emails.  For more information, see
  • Next meeting of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa: December 4 (telephonic)

New requests for action:

  • The Chief Diversity Office and the Pomerantz Career Center have partnered to create an exciting new enrichment opportunity for students in your college. “Culturally Intelligent Leadership” is a three-part series offered for credit that provides knowledge and skills for leadership in an increasingly diverse and global workplace.  The planners are seeking students to build the cohort for the pilot spring 2014 class, and ask your help getting information about the course out to your students.  Please read the details here:
