University of Iowa

Am I required to attend the Iowa New Faculty Orientation (INFO)?

Attendance at the Office of the Provost’s Iowa New Faculty Orientation (INFO) is strongly encouraged, but not required. INFO is designed to complement collegiate orientations, which may be required. Please check with your college or department for more information.  INFO is designed to welcome new faculty to the campus and provide resources to assist you in settling in to your first years at Iowa. You will have an opportunity to network with other new faculty members, as well as with senior administrators.  You are welcome to attend all or some of the scheduled events.  Please see the INFO agenda for more information.

Who is invited to attend?

All tenured, tenure-track, clinical-track, research-track and instructional-track faculty are invited to attend. Visiting faculty, lecturers and associates with 50% or greater appointments are also invited.

Whom do I contact to arrange an accommodation to participate in the orientation programs?

To request a reasonable accommodation, contact Kim Carter, Office of the Provost, in advance of the program: or via phone: (319) 335-0256.

I have already attended a different orientation session and signed up for my university benefits. Is this a duplication of that session?

If you have already attended a UI Benefits Orientation session and enrolled in your benefits, you may find that section of the INFO duplicative but may find the rest of the program of interest.  If you have not yet enrolled, you will have the opportunity to enroll on-site during the INFO session with UI Benefits staff available to respond to your questions.

How can I find out more information about enrolling in the university’s employee benefits programs?

View the University Benefits website or contact UI Benefits at (319) 335-2676. University Human Resources also provides additional information that may be of use on their website Onboarding.UI website.

I am a new faculty member, but I didn’t receive the invitation. May I still attend?

Please contact the Office of the Provost at or (319) 335-0256 for more information.

I can’t attend the INFO program in August. How can I access the materials distributed during the session?

The presentation slides from the INFO session and additional information will be available on the Office of the Provost New and Early Career Faculty webpage after the program.

I can't attend the entire orientation program. May I attend only a portion of the program?

Attendance at all INFO sessions is optional. Feel free to attend the sessions that best fit your schedule and needs.

May I attend only the President and Provost New Faculty Welcome Reception?

Yes, you and a guest are encouraged to attend the welcome reception.

Does the presentation on the role of faculty in creating an inclusive campus climate, including preventing sexual harassment fulfill the UI's harassment prevention training requirement?

The University of Iowa requires al faculty, any title, who hold at least a 50 percent appointment to complete harassment prevention training within the first 60 days of employment; academic and administrative officers (AAOs) are requirement to complete an approved prevention module within the first two months. Participation in the Faculty Members’ Role in Creating an Inclusive Campus Climate, including Preventing Sexual Harassment session qualifies as credit for this requirement. Faculty may also choose from an online course or an instructor-led course available through Compliance and Qualifications (CQ) System and My Training in Self Service. UI Health Care orientation also provides qualifying instructor-led classes.  Se the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity for additional information:

Is FERPA training offered during this session?

No, the required FERPA training is offered as an online module and quiz. For more information see FERPA Training and Certification Requirements.

Is child care available during the orientation session or the reception?

Unfortunately not, but the university offers information about community child care resources on the UI Build a Career | Build a Life Children & Family Resources webpage.

What is the dress code for the INFO sessions and welcome reception?

Business casual dress is most common.
