Fall 2017 Textbook/Course Materials Orders

The Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (HEOA) requires that UI students have information (titles, ISBNs, and retail pricing) about required and recommended textbooks and course materials before they register for classes. Course materials under the HEOA include access codes, e-books, course packets, clickers, and lab supplies. Early registration for fall 2017 courses is scheduled for April 10-21, 2017.

The three Iowa City book stores – the Iowa Hawk Shop/University Book Store, Iowa Book, and Prairie Lights – encourage faculty to place their orders as soon as possible so that they can find the best textbook prices for UI students. The Iowa Hawk Shop/University Book Store (, for example, is asking faculty to place fall 2017 book orders by April 3rd in order to provide students with the best possible textbook prices.

Early faculty book orders allow the Iowa Hawk Shop (and other book stores) to identify available used books, negotiate rental agreements with book vendors at a favorable rate for students, or consider lower-cost e-book options. Early faculty book orders increase money available to students for buyback at the end of the semester, and also allow students to “shop around” and purchase their books and course materials before the start of fall classes.

We would appreciate it if you could encourage your faculty to place their book orders for fall 2017, and to enter textbook information in MAUI as soon as possible, so that textbook/course material information is available to students before early registration for fall 2017 courses.

For more information on entering textbook information into MAUI, see the MAUI Help document at Textbook information should be entered into MAUI in the Offerings Planner by looking up course offerings at and selecting the textbook tab from the dropdown of options.

The Course Lib-Courses Missing Textbook Report at Course Lib- Courses Missing Textbook in MAUI provides a full listing of courses by academic department that are missing course material/textbook information.
