Christopher Squier and Karen Wachsmuth will discuss and illustrate how opera presents epidemic diseases such as tuberculosis (La Traviata and La Bohème) and cholera (Death in Venice) and pathogenic agents such as tobacco (Carmen and Susanna’s Secret). The program is based on an honors seminar that the presenters have offered for almost ten years – Music, Madness, Disease, and Death
