DEI Goals and Examples

The UI Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Digest represents a process for creating a digital inventory of FY19 campus-wide activities that advance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) on the University of Iowa campus. It is a joint project of the Chief Diversity Office and the Office of Provost, with extensive input from campus stakeholders.

The purpose of the DEI Digest is to:

  • Assemble a robust inventory of existing campus-wide DEI-related activities and objectives.
  • Facilitate an assessment of campus-wide strengths and areas of opportunity.
  • Enhance collaboration across units.
  • Create a comprehensive profile of current DEI-related activities to assist with the search and orientation process for the Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion position.

To assemble the inventory, the Chief Diversity Office and the Office of the Provost request that all colleges, central offices, shared governance bodies, and UI Diversity Councils enter FY19 unit-level DEI activities into the online DEI Digest portal by December 21, 2018.  A PDF iconPreview of DEI Digest Fields of the questions is available to prepare your responses prior to entering the portal.  Individuals engaged in various DEI-related activities that may/may not be represented by a unit report, may also enter their activities via the portal by December 21, 2018. A DEI Digest draft report will be shared with participating units on January 14, 2019 and a final report will be released to the campus during the 2019 DEI Update address in Spring 2019.

Which units should enter their FY19 DEI-related activities?

  • Colleges, International Programs, and UI Libraries
  • Central Offices (Office of the President, Office of the Provost, Chief Diversity Office, Division of Student Life, Enrollment Management, External Relations, Finance and Operations, General Counsel, Human Resources, UI Health Care, Information Technology Services, Intercollegiate Athletics, Research & Economic Development)
  • Shared Governance Bodies (Faculty Senate, Staff Council, UI Student Government, UI Graduate and Professional Student Government)
  • UI Employee Diversity Councils (African American Council, Council on Disability Awareness, Council on the Status of Women, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) Staff & Faculty Association, Native American Council, UI Latinx Council)

Which units may enter their FY19 DEI-related activities?

Individuals and units not listed above, including student organizations, are welcome to list their activities, but will not be expected to do so.  Please consult with your collegiate and unit leadership to coordinate unit-wide reporting and reduce the potential for duplicate entries.

What types of activities should be included?

Unit activities may include, but are not limited to, programs, initiatives, policies and/or events related to diversity equity and inclusion.

Additionally, units are asked to identify how their DEI-related activities support the university’s goals to:

  • Create an inclusive & equitable campus environment;
  • Recruit, retain and develop a diverse campus community (faculty, staff and students);
  • Support curricula, teaching, scholarship and clinical services that advance diversity, equity & inclusion;
  • Enhance accountability, effectiveness, and collaboration through strategic use of DEI-related data in planning and assessment;
  • Other.  Please provide unit-level DEI activities that do not fit neatly under one of the above goals.

For examples of actions units can take to advance these DEI Digest Priority Goals, a sample of DEI-related activities and success metrics is available at: PDF iconDEI Goals and Examples.

Unit representatives may also register to attend one or more of the following sessions:

  • Tips and Tools for Entering Unit-Level FY19 DEI Activities into the DEI Digest (45 minute session): November 29, 2018, 1-1:45 p.m. and 2-2:45 p.m.; and December 5, 2018, 12:30-1:15 p.m. and 1:30-2:15 p.m.  Online registration at this link.
  • Making the Paradigm Shift from “Diversity” to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI): Tools, Resources, and Strategies for Integrating DEI into Unit Plans, offered via UI BUILD program on January 31, 2019, 9-noon, and February 5, 2019, 9-noon.  The session is a collaboration between the Office of the Provost, Chief Diversity Office, and University Human Resources. For units that do not have current DEI-related activities to report, a FY19 action may include having a team of 2-3 individuals attend one of the workshops and return to the unit to facilitate unit discussions and planning.  For units with current DEI-activities, this session will provide tools and processes for advancing those initiatives. To register, use UI Employee Self Services “My Training”: https://compliance.hr.uiowa.edu/my_training/course_enroll_details/952.

What if our unit has not yet developed DEI-related activities?

Please complete the online survey with this information. The survey also offers units the opportunity to indicate that they would like to meet with someone to discuss tools and resources for integrating DEI into their unit planning process.

Where do we go to access the DEI Digest portal?

The DEI Digest may be accessed via this online link: FY19 DEI Digest. Units are asked to complete their entries by December 21, 2018.
