As you know, one of the four strategic priority areas (or “pillars”) of our strategic plan for 2010 to 2016, Renewing The Iowa Promise, is “new frontiers in the arts.” I write to make you aware of an exciting new initiative in support of that strategic priority.

As you know, students are free to use ISIS to add and drop courses until 11:59 p.m. on the night before classes start. As it is set up now in the spring, students can add and drop without anyone’s signature until 11:59 p.m.

Assessment Innovation Grants for Fall 2012

Many academic programs have identified outcomes for their students such as lifelong learning, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and effective communication. These types of learning outcomes are widely valued, but it can be a challenge to gather information on how well our programs help students achieve them.

Over the next few months, departments and colleges will be involved in the process of arriving at recommendations for the awarding of tenure, and for promotions in all academic ranks. The policies and procedures related to promotion and tenure are provided in the links below.

As many of you know, Pat Folsom is retiring as Assistant Provost for Enrollment Management and Director of the Academic Advising Center, effective September 1. Pat has been an invaluable staff member the past 31 years and she (and her vast knowledge) will be missed greatly.

Last fall the Office of the Provost invited proposals for the next round of strategic interdisciplinary tenured/tenure track faculty hires under the UI Cluster Hire Initiative. During the spring semester, the Office of the Provost, Council of Deans, and Office of the Vice President for Research reviewed many worthy submissions. I am now pleased to announce the winning proposals for 2011-12 (with some accompanying text from those proposals):
