Path to Distinction incorporates research-informed strategies to enhance the scope of faculty searches. The Path to Distinction: Best Practices Guidance for Faculty Search Committees provides research-based strategies that support the university’s commitment to enhance excellence through faculty contributing to an inclusive culture. The companion document, Path to Distinction Toolkit, contains worksheets and guidance documents for faculty search committees to utilize during the various aspects of the faculty recruitment process. These resources, combined with search committee training, supports committee discussion regarding the process. Departments that have used these tools and guidance were able to broaden their applicant and interview pools.

Faculty search committee members are also encouraged to review the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) Recruitment Manual to become familiar with the UI’s search process, equal employment opportunity/affirmative action (EEO/AA) guidelines and best practices and relevant university policies. OIE staff are available to provide consultations and resources to the hiring departments on EEO/AA requirements.
