Task Force on Undergraduate Education and Success

Charge - Membership - Contact - Updates

Charge

  1. Expand access: Develop a five-year plan for increased enrollments of resident, non-resident, international, and minority (especially resident Latino) students, both freshmen and transfers.  Plan to include metrics, projected costs and revenues, action steps, etc.
  2. Promote success: Develop a five-year plan to improve retention and graduation that provides incentives to—and makes colleges accountable for—meeting the targets.  “Mainstream” student success (i.e., retention) initiatives, such as freshman seminars and living-learning communities, in colleges, in partnership with Student Services. Consider expansion of student residences (by purchase or construction) to strengthen the integration of academic and co-curricular experiences that are vital to undergraduate success.
  3. Strengthen academic quality: Articulate a vision of an integrative, transformational educational experience for students that prepares them to succeed in today’s world, and positions UI at the forefront of undergraduate education innovation in the Big Ten.  What would it take to implement this vision?  How can IT facilitate transformational excellence in education?
  4. Promote alcohol safety: A town/gown committee to recommend and monitor implementation of strategies for alcohol safety—a partnership involving city government, the University, students, parents, and business and community leaders.  University implementation led by Interim VP for Student Services Tom Rocklin.

Summer 2009:

The Strategic Task Force on Undergraduate Education and Success is in the process of gathering information and documents relevant to its task. Members of the committee have discussed current intitiatives focused on undergraduate education, and expect that the reports produced by the Student Success Team will inform their work. The committee met twice during the spring semester; a subcommittee concerned with devleoping an enrollment management plan has been meeting approximately bi-weekly. The expectation is that the subcommittee will present a report to the task force in August when the task force reconvenes. The committee anticipates providing opportunities for the wider University community to provide input during the fall semester.
