Advising

The Advising area in MAUI will consist primarily of custom interfaces. University advisors track contacts with students, so we anticipate that MAUI will provide a new interface for individual advisors to track the content of all contacts and communications with students and extend the ability to share this content with other advisors as students add programs of study or change from one to another.

The foundation of any system of advising interfaces is student records information, so that the advising area cannot be developed until both the Admissions and Student Records areas in MAUI are in full production.

Advising interfaces will be designed to allow advisors quickly to access data that is of the greatest importance in order to maximize the efficiency of their time when working with students. By layering interfaces, the Advising area in MAUI will allow advisors to work quickly with data or mine more deeply as needed.

In comparison to the current system, the Advising area in MAUI will more fully integrate data at the highest levels where the data is most commonly needed and used. For example, the following kinds of data will be more highly integrated within MAUI advising interfaces:

Up to now, the design of screens used by advisors has largely been driven by the need to provide a view of specific information at the table level, within the limitations of mainframe screens. Even OSIRIS screens tend to pass this model along into an internet and WWW age where so much more agility is to be expected. The MAUI Advising area will allow advisors from across the University campus to collaborate to create the design that is the most effective for advising.

Degree Audit and Transfer Course Articulation (DA-TA) information is an integral part of the advising process. From a Project MAUI perspective, DA-TA is a separate component with a dedicated team focused on upgrading our existing mainframe-based DELI system to a new web-based version. Their efforts and progress can be found at the Project MAUI DA-TA web site.
