Graduate and professional programs are crucial to the academic and research reputation of the institution; to the creation, dissemination, and preservation of knowledge; and to creating a vibrant learning environment for all students, including undergraduates.

The Office of the Provost plays a key role in enhancing the quality of graduate and professional education. In collaboration with colleges and deans, the Office of the Provost allocates resources, evaluates and assures the quality of graduate and professional programs, and reports outcomes assessments and other measures of effectiveness to the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

The Office of the Provost also has primary responsibility for overseeing faculty, and final responsibility for promotion and tenure decisions for all colleges rests with the Provost. It is the Provost's responsibility to ensure that promotion and tenure policies and procedures yield permanent faculty with the strongest possible credentials in and commitments to teaching, research and scholarship, and service. The Office of the Provost encourages and supports college- and department-level efforts to recruit and retain a faculty of national and international distinction, and fosters new initiatives to aid colleges in their recruitment and retention efforts.

The deans of the University's graduate and professional colleges (the Graduate College, the colleges of Dentistry, Law, Pharmacy, and Public Health, and the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine) report directly to the Provost. The Dean of the Graduate College is also Associate Provost for Graduate Education.

"One of the core values of the public research university [is] a commitment to excellence in scholarship and creative work and in the education of our graduate and professional students. That commitment will . . . inspire my efforts to support faculty research and creative production to the maximum extent permitted by our resources. And it will inspire a firm adherence to the highest standards of appointment, tenure, and promotion, and not just standards appropriate to the institution we are today but to the institution we aspire to be."

--Executive Vice President and Provost Michael J. Hogan
