Faculty/Departmental Reporting Requirements
See also: Faculty-related Policies and Procedures
The Provost oversees the University's adherence to a variety of policies related to faculty, and is also responsible for communicating with the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, regarding all academic matters--a responsibility that includes coordinating the submission of several annual governance reports related to faculty. For this and many other administrative reasons, the Office of the Provost collects various kinds of data about the work that faculty do. In some cases, departmental offices are asked to provide these data on behalf of their faculty; in other cases, faculty are asked to report directly. Below is a list of requirements for faculty reporting to the Office of the Provost, including links to several online reporting tools.
Please note that other administrative offices also have separate reporting requirements for faculty and departments. The Office of the Provost works with other offices to use existing data whenever possible.
Individual Faculty Reporting
- Developmental Leave Reports - Faculty who have received developmental leave awards (Career Development Award, Faculty Scholar Award, Global Scholar Award, etc.) must submit a report in the semester following the leave. See the Office of the Provost Faculty Development pages for reporting instructions. Contact Sue Moore (susan-moore@uiowa.edu) with questions.
- Conflicts of Commitment and Interest and Outside Professional Activity Reporting - In accordance with the UI Policy on Conflict of Interest (which addresses Conflicts of Commitment, Conflicts of Interest in the Workplace, and Conflicts of Interest in Research), all full-time tenured, tenure track, and clinical track faculty must report all outside professional activities (often called "consulting") via the Office of the Provost Outside Professional Activity web application. Information about the policy and reporting requirements can be found on the Office of the Provost Conflicts of Commitment and Interest and Annual Report of Outside Professional Activities page. Contact Lori Cranston (lori-cranston@uiowa.edu) with questions about the reporting process, or to request access to the online application.
Departmental Reporting
- Course Instructors - By the start of each academic session, departmental offices must identify which instructors will teach each of their courses that session. This is done online in OSIRIS, the administrative system for managing course and grade information. To request access to OSIRIS for your department, contact the Office of the Registrar.
- Post-tenure Effort Allocation - In accordance with the University's Post-tenure Effort Allocation Policy, each spring (late fall for CLAS) DEOs and each of their tenured faculty members must agree upon a planned allocation of effort (among teaching, research, service, and clinical service) for the following academic year. DEOs or their departmental administrative assistants must record this plan online, via the Office of the Provost PTEAP web application. If the effort allocation does not fall within "unit norms," a brief explanation must be included in the faculty member's record. Contact Lori Cranston (lori-cranston@uiowa.edu) with questions about the PTEAP process, or to request access to the online application.
