Conflicts of Commitment and Interest: Executive Summary of Major Changes to the Revised Policy on Conflict of Interest
I. Delineates the three major types of conflict of interest the revised policy addresses:
(1) conflict of commitment,
(2) conflict of interest in the workplace, and
(3) conflict of interest in research.
II. Requires written disclosure and a management plan prior to engaging in any
activity that is potentially conflictual. Information about and forms for
disclosure and management plans are available at:

III. Conflict of interest in research now includes all research, not just
sponsored research as in the past.
IV. Using technology in research when the researcher is named as an inventor on
the technology's patent is now considered a conflict of interest that requires
disclosure and management.
V. The revised policy contains new restrictions on involvement in research using
human subjects by investigators with a conflict of interest.
VI. Required reporting of conflicts of interest by full-time faculty has been
expanded and moved to a web-based form available at: https://provost.uiowa.edu/apps/profactivity.
