Annual Reviews

Each November the Office of the Provost distributes a listing of faculty who require an annual review based on UI Policy. This list includes all probationary faculty in both tenure and clinical tracks.

The Faculty Status Report, including an explanation of this report, is available electronically at: https://provost.uiowa.edu/apps/facstat.  Deans, DEOs and collegiate administrators automatically have access to this report with their HawkID and password. Access for other individuals may be requested by contacting Kris Yows at kristina-yows@uiowa.edu.

The policy regarding review of probationary faculty is outlined in Section 10.4 of the Operations Manual.

Requirements:

  • The appropriate departmental or collegiate faculty must review all probationary faculty based on the criteria in Section 10.4 (b) and (c) of the Operations Manual.
  • It is the responsibility of the Dean and the DEO to ensure completion of the review process. It is expected that the annual review will be performed in consultation with the individual faculty member.
  • The annual review of probationary faculty should be as complete and detailed as possible in order to provide sufficient feedback and guidance to the faculty member under review.
  • Upon completion of the annual review process, the probationary faculty member should be informed of the results of the evaluation in one or both of the following ways:
    • Receive a copy of any written statement provided by the Dean to the Provost, or have a scheduled meeting with the Dean.
    • If a review committee is involved, receive a written statement from the committee or have a meeting with the committee.
  • Probationary faculty members should lbe informed of their right to reply in writing to their annual evaluations, and all such replies should automatically become a part of the official records maintained for them

A review is required for faculty who are hired this year. Statements about new faculty members may have to be tentative. All new faculty should be notified of the annual review process and the review criteria which are applied.

Faculty Annual Review Workflow Form:

The faculty Annual Review workflow form will serve to implement a continued appointment or reappointment for each faculty member. For more information regarding this form please see the Annual Review form.

Please Note:

Departments do not have to maintain a paper copy of the documents attached in workflow. If these documents are needed in the future, a printout from the HR system will be sufficient.

If a probationary faculty member is being recommended for promotion, no review form is required.
