Application deadlineFriday, March 22, 2013

The Council on the Status of Women, founded in 1976, strives to bring a rich and diverse group of UI students, staff, and faculty together to achieve its mission.

  • Mission Statement: The mission of the Council on the Status of Women (CSW) is to ensure an environment that supports the rights of all women at The University of Iowa. The council is committed to working in partnership with the University to develop policies that enhance women’s learning, professional growth, creativity, employment, and contributions to the institution and to the broader community.

  • Goals: CSW strives to fulfill its mission through:
    • Advocacy: CSW acts as an advisory body to the University administration and as an advocacy group for the wide diversity of women on campus;
    • Leadership Development: CSW provides leadership development opportunities; and
    • Social Networking: CSW provides an environment in which women and men who are allies can network and form personal and professional connections.

  • Activities:
    • CSW Meetings: CSW meets monthly – typically on the second Thursday of the month, 11:30-1:00 p.m.
    • CSW Committees: CSW creates committees to work on projects that Council members deem important. The current committees include: Diversity and Campus Climate, Herstory, Nominations, and Unwelcome Behavior. All students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to participate in a CSW committee; membership on the Council is not required to participate on a CSW committee, although the chair of each committee must be an elected CSW member.
    • CSW Current Projects: The Undergraduate Sexual Misconduct Survey, recognized by and received financial support from The University of Iowa.

  • Membership: The Council consists of twenty-five voting members (five faculty members, five professional and scientific staff, five merit staff, five undergraduate students and five graduate students). All members serve three-year terms except students, who serve a one-year term and are invited to serve up to two more years if their schedule permits. Each spring the Council accepts nominations, voting in new members. Terms start in the fall.
    • In addition to the voting members, the Council includes ex-oficio members from the offices of the University Vice Presidents and Provost, the Chief Diversity Officer, the Sexual Misconduct Response Coordinator, the Director of the Women's Resource and Action Center, the Chair of Gender, Women and Sexuality, the Director of RVAP, and the Director of Women in Science and Engineering and liaisons from UI Student Government, Executive Council of Graduate and Professional Students, Staff Council and Faculty Council.

  • Commitment: Each Council member is expected to attend monthly Council meetings, and to join a standing committee and participate in its work. The ability of CSW to advocate effectively for women’s issues on the UI campus depends upon the active participation of all members. If you would like to participate in the work of the Council but are not able to make the required commitment, you may join a committee and/or attend the monthly meetings as a visitor.  If you would like to participate as a non-Council member, email Dee Gansemer.
