Susan Johnson
Associate Provost for Faculty

Dr. Susan R. Johnson received her B.S., M.D., and an M.S. in Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health from the University of Iowa. She completed residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and then joined the faculty of that Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, where she is now Professor. In 1999 she received a secondary appointment in the Department of Epidemiology in the College of Public Health.
She was the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the Carver College of Medicine from 1994 to 2003, and in 2005 was appointed as Associate Provost for Faculty.
Dr. Johnson’s clinical and research interests are in the areas of menopausal health issues, particularly the use of hormones and other drugs for prevention in post menopausal women, and premenstrual syndromes. She is currently the Study Chair for the NIH sponsored observational study of the menopause transition, Study of Women Across the Nation (SWAN), serves on the data, safety and monitoring boards of several other multicenter clinical trials of various postmenopausal preventive drugs, and written numerous articles and chapters regarding these issues. She currently serves as an ad hoc reviewer for several clinical journals, and has been involved with numerous NIH grant reviews and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists editorial review committees. She is active on the state and national level in the licensing and credentialing of physicians; she currently serves on the Executive Board of the National Board of Medical Examiners, and on several committees of the Federation of State Medical Boards.
