John Keller received his B.S. degree in biology from the University
of Illinois in 1974, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biological
Materials from Northwestern University in 1978 and 1982, respectively.
Following a six-year faculty career at the Medical University of South
Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC, he was appointed Associate Professor
of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Dows Institute for Dental
Research in 1988. He was promoted to full Professor and received tenure
in 1991.
During his faculty career, Professor Keller received a Career
Development Award from the National Institute of Dental Research and has
served on many permanent and ad hoc grant review committees for the NIH.
He received a Collegiate Teaching Award in 1995. Professor Keller was
the Director of the Dental Student Research Program from 1989-1998,
during which time the program was recognized by the American Association
for Dental Research (AADR) as the highest ranked program of its kind.
Dr. Keller was elected to the Board of Directors of the AADR and served
as its President in 1997-98. He is also an elected fellow of the Academy
for Dental Materials. Dr. Keller was principal or co-principal
investigator for grants and contracts totally over $10M; currently he is
co-director of an NIDCR comprehensive training grant. He serves on the
national advisory board for two major collaborative research grants at
Marquette University School of Dentistry and the University of South
Carolina, Clemson, MUSC collaborative research consortium. Dr. Keller is
the author of over 80 peer reviewed manuscripts and 250 abstracts, book
chapters and review articles pertaining to his research in the area of
biomaterials, and various educational topics.
He was appointed as Associate Dean for Students and Academic Programs in
the Graduate College in 1998. He held that position for two years,
before being appointed interim Dean and Associate Provost from
2000-2002. He was appointed to his current position in 2002. He serves
on the Council of Graduate Schools Advisory Task Force on Research and
Information Services as well as the Association of Graduate Schools
Nominating Committee. In 2006, he was elected to serve as the Chair of
Graduate Deans Council for the Committee on institutional Cooperation (CIC).
